A balance of simplicity, precision and substance since 2012.

Pen Type-A is manufactured with quality and care at a multi-generation machine shop in Vermont, USA.

In 2023, it was added to the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum's permanent collection.

Machined from stainless steel, Pen Type-A® comes in 4 variants.

The Classic variant has an engraved imperial + metric ruler and is available in a glass bead stainless finish or with a black cerakote.

The Architect scale version features either an imperial or metric architect scale.

Pen Type-A® is available with a custom laser engraving. Available in a black cerakote, a ceramic polymer coating. Even though this coating is durable, over time it will wear and reveal the stainless steel underneath, giving it kind of a rugged feel.

Also available with a custom laser engraving.

The deep wells in the cylinders and the square sleeves are painstakingly drilled out from a solid block with a gun drill. This machine uses high pressure oil pumped to the cutting edge of a specialized bit to slowly drill out a perfectly straight and deep well.

The clean and smooth cylindrical pen slides neatly into its sleeve, held in by a magnet once in its final position.

You’ll note a slight popping sound when removing it from its sheath—the effect of high tolerances creating a pneumatic seal, much like a piston.

There is no visible branding on the surface of Pen Type-A®. However, hidden under the coin screw is our tiny CW&T inscription. (Just in case you or your grandkids want to figure out where it came from.) Shown here on the sleeve is an example of a custom engraving you can add to your order.

Special Edition Pen Type-A with laser etched architect's scales on all four sides

1/2"=1'
3/4"=1'
3/8"=1'
1/4"=1'
1/8"=1'
3/16"=1'
3/32"=1'

METRIC architect's scale has the following scales marked

1:1 1:20
1:25 1:50
1:75 1:100
1:125 1:200

MADE IN THE USA

Pen Type-A® is machined using high precision tools at a manufacturing facility in Vermont.

The stepped geometry of the tip leaves the contact point exposed, so you can see what you are drawing. It is perfect for architects, illustrators, and designers. Inside the ruler sleeve is a stepped area keeping the super fine tip gently rested against a silicone pad.

No idea why did you switch to polished pens

I got one of these pens back on the Kickstarter if I am correct, years ago. It had a nice brushed texture, and the pen was comfortable. I gave that pen away to my dad, he really liked it. Now I bought another one for myself, and the pen is fully polished. It's impossible to hold it comfortably, it slips out of my fingers all the time. The weight of it also helps this slipping. It just cannot be steady in my fingers. I had to use 220 grid sandpaper and make brushed steel texture at the bottom half of the pen so I could actually hold it. It's much better now, but I simply don't get why would you make such a change which turns the pen impossible to use.

Disappointing at best.

This purchase was a terrible mistake. The plastic pouch it came in says "ruler sleeve over-engineered to last for generations." The scale engraving is of such poor quality that it is barely legible. I purchased a metric version a few years ago and it is still a wonderful pen. This imperial version is worse than I would expect from a Chinese knock off. $197.00 from Jet Pens is a ridiculous price for this poor excuse for a pen. You should be ashamed to put something this bad on the market. 1 star is more than this pen deserves. Have you no shame?

Not very amazing

Easy stain, writes badly. It does make a very interesting sound though. Not recommend for those people who uses pen to write as it is not convenient. If you want style in your pocket then you can buy this. The product is okay, good for signatures and sketching.
